You can get a filling in Chicago that is the color of your tooth

Dentistry is constantly evolving. For over a century, when a patient had tooth decay the common option to repair the damage was silver colored fillings. While these were effective at repairing the damage, they had a very negative impact on the aesthetics of the smile.

When tooth colored fillings, or composite resin, was introduced it gave patients an option for repairing damaged teeth in a way that looked completely natural. They can smile, laugh, or yell without their restoration work being noticed.

Typically, only one appointment is required for Peter W. Fry DDS to complete the restoration. During this appointment, the decay will be removed and the tooth will be restored. While most patients prefer composite fillings for their aesthetic value, they have other advantages as well. One of the most notable is that they require very little of the healthy tooth to be removed when it is prepared for the filling. The reason for this is that the composite resin bonds to the healthy portion of the tooth. Another advantage is the composite expands and contracts at about the same rate as tooth enamel when exposed to heat or cold. Silver amalgam does this much more rapidly and can result in cracks in the tooth.

Tooth colored fillings take longer to place due to the procedure involved. Once the decay is removed, saliva cannot contact the tooth, it must be completely dry. Peter W. Fry DDS will start by applying an adhesive followed by thin layers of the composite resin. The final step is the curing process, which normally only takes about a minute using a special light.

One of the few drawbacks to composite resin fillings is they are more expensive than silver amalgam restorations. Most patients do not object to spending a little bit more to achieve a smile that looks natural, they consider it money well spent.

Peter W. Fry DDS has extensive experience providing dental care to the residents of Chicago. If you need a tooth filled, and do not want silver amalgam, call Making Smiles Happen today at 773 - 545 1414 and schedule your appointment.
