General Information about Veneers

We are very fortunate to live in a time when dental technology allows us to change things we do not absolutely love about our smile. To cosmetically improve the appearance of your smile, you now have more options than ever. There are braces to straighten teeth and correct issues with bite, teeth whitening treatments to provide a bright smile, and porcelain veneers to transform the look of your smile in just two visits.

A veneer is a wafer-thin shell that is adhered to the surface of a tooth or teeth to improve its appearance. Although there are several materials used to create veneers, porcelain is ideal and very widely used. This material is most like natural enamel in that it refracts light, adding natural sparkle to teeth. Porcelain is also translucent, just as natural teeth. With this cosmetic treatment, a single tooth can be covered and blend seamlessly with others, or all visible teeth can be covered to provide a dramatic smile makeover.

Some of the common improvements seen with porcelain veneers include:
  • Filling in of gaps between teeth
  • Correction of uneven teeth, where one may be set back from others
  • Covering worn or slightly stained enamel
  • Correction of teeth that are too short or too long
  • Correction of cosmetic chips or cracks
  • Correction of teeth that have an irregular shape
Porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic treatment because these thin shells quickly cover various issues that affect the look of the smile. Non-invasive, porcelain veneers are a conservative treatment that cover only the outer surface of the tooth as opposed to the entire tooth, like a dental crown. When a veneer is placed, only a small portion of surface enamel is removed to accommodate the depth of the thin shell.

During the initial consultation, Dr. Fry will assess teeth and discuss the patient's overall cosmetic goals. Should veneers seem the most suitable treatment option, teeth will be prepared by removing a small amount of enamel after the area has been numbed with local anesthetic. Impressions are then taken and sent to the dental laboratory, where custom veneers are skillfully crafted. While awaiting new veneers, the patient may experience a bit of sensitivity due to the removal of enamel, but should not feel any discomfort. Within about two weeks, custom-made veneers are ready to be cemented into place.
