Metal free dentistry provides natural looking restorations in Chicago

In dentistry, metal has long been relied on for its strength. It has been used for crowns and fillings. While its strength is not questioned, many patients do not like having it in their mouths. They would prefer restorations that are more natural.

Advances in dentistry are making the use of metal restorations unnecessary. Patients with metal allergies had previously found their choices very limited, and in general, no one wants a mouth full of metal.

Composite resin fillings have given patients a much more natural looking option compared to silver amalgam restorations. Patients benefit because they require less healthy tooth be removed to place the filling and they match the color of the tooth, making them undetectable.

Since composite resin fillings are completed in the office, this procedure normally only requires one appointment.

If the decay has damaged too much of the tooth to make a composite resin filling an option, then a dental crown is likely the best choice for a natural restoration. The days of gold or silver crowns being your only option have long since passed. Today, a number restoration options are metal free. The most common material used when fabricating dental crowns is porcelain, it is favored for its translucency, as well as the way it reflects light, mimicking tooth enamel. Peter W. Fry DDS also offers Chicago residents crowns made from zirconium, it is more expensive than porcelain, but it is also stronger.

A dental crown generally requires two appointments. During the first, the damaged portion of the tooth will be removed and Peter W. Fry DDS will reshape it to accommodate the crown. He will take impressions of your teeth and determine the proper shade for the crown. A temporary will be placed to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is placed. This can take a few weeks. Once it is ready, you will return to the office to have the temporary removed and the new one permanently placed. It will match the rest of your teeth in size, shape, and color giving you a beautiful natural restoration.

If you have metal restorations that you would like removed, or need fillings or a crown, and do not want metal placed in your mouth call Making Smiles Happen at 773 - 545 1414.
