Your Dentist in Chicago, IL can provide natural looking restorations

Metal has had a long history of being used in dental restorations, while it could restore the tooth’s function; the aesthetics of the smile were damaged forever. Today there are options for restoring teeth that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are effective at restoring oral health.

Some dentists still prefer to place metal restorations, but Peter W. Fry, D.D.S. offers patients metal free options. He can replace silver amalgam fillings with composite resin fillings. This is a common request from patients who are going to have porcelain veneers or a “smile makeover.” Although patients typically are interested in metal free dentistry for its aesthetic value, it is highly beneficial to those with metal allergies.

Composite fillings

Cavities affect millions of people, making fillings one of the most common dental restorations Dr. Fry performs. While patients like composite fillings for their aesthetic properties, there are other benefits including:
  • The filling material is strong and resistant to breaking.
  • Composite fillings require less healthy tooth structure be removed to place the filling.
  • It expands as shrinks with the tooth, unlike silver amalgam fillings that can cause fractures.
Porcelain crowns and fixed dental bridges

An untreated cavity can result in extensive damage to a tooth’s structure. If treatment is sought from Dr. Fry before the root is damaged, he can often restore the tooth with a dental crown, if the tooth has to be extracted, a fixed dental bridge may be used to replace the tooth. These two treatments are very similar; they use the same materials and typically require two appointments. A dental crown is shaped like a hollow tooth and is bonded over a damaged tooth to restore its shape and function. A fixed dental bridge is made of two crowns that will go over the teeth on each side of the gap and has an artificial tooth in the middle to replace the missing tooth.

Porcelain restorations are fabricated to match the rest of your teeth in size, shape, and shade. Porcelain is semi translucent, giving it a very natural appearance. You will be able to smile and laugh with confidence without anyone knowing a tooth has been restored.
