Replacing missing teeth dental with implants in Chicago

If you lose a tooth, it is important for both your oral health and the aesthetics of your smile to replace it. Dental implants can provide you with a very natural restoration; they will prevent your teeth from drifting, and stop the loss of bone.

What are dental implants?
Dental implants are often described as an “artificial tooth root,” which is a very good description of its purpose. The implant is actually a small titanium post that is placed in the jawbone during a simple surgical procedure. Titanium is a biocompatible material and your jawbone will fuse to it. This makes it as strong as a tooth root and prevents the resorption of your jawbone. Implants are the only restoration option that can prevent bone loss.

Placing the implant
The procedure to place the implant is very simple and any discomfort patients experience during or after the procedure is very minor and frequently compared to that of an extraction. The procedure is performed with local anesthetic to numb the area where the implant will be placed. The implant is placed in the jawbone and it typically takes three to six months to fuse to the bone.

Placing the restoration
Once the jawbone has fused to the implant, an abutment will be attached to it. Dr. Fry will then take impressions of both arches of teeth. These will be used to create a dental crown that will complete the restoration process. It typically takes the dental lab about two weeks to fabricate your crown; in the meantime, the doctor will place a temporary crown. The permanent crown will be fabricated to be a perfect match to your existing teeth. Because the restored tooth rests on an “artificial tooth root,” it looks and functions just like the rest of your teeth, and no one will be able to tell which one has been restored.
