Zirconium, a great option for cosmetic dental crowns in Chicago

When a tooth is broken or has too much decay for a filling, but the root is still healthy, a crown is considered the best option. In the past crowns were made from all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, all ceramic, or all-porcelain. Depending on what tooth needed a crown, and any metal allergies you had, your dentist would decide what would work best. Along with most of the traditional crown materials Peter W. Fry DDS also offers crowns made from zirconium.

Zirconium is relatively a new option; dentists have only been fabricating crowns out of it for about ten years. It is extremely strong; zirconium crowns are compared to the strength of metal crowns. This material can be used to restore any tooth, even a molar. All metal or porcelain fused with metal is typically used when a molar needs a crown due to the pressure exerted when biting or chewing. Metal had been the only crown material that could withstand that pressure.

All metal or porcelain fused with metal crowns has some serious drawbacks, starting with the fact no one with a metal allergy can use them. From the aesthetics point of view there are yet more problems; no one likes the thought of opening their mouth and revealing a shiny metal dental crown. The solution to this problem was to fuse it with porcelain and this did make it blend in but over time, the gums can begin to recede. When this happened, you would get a black line at the gums. Yet another downside to porcelain fused with metal crowns is the fact that light could not pass through them. Therefore, while they did match the color of your teeth, they still did not look natural because of being opaque.

Zirconium crowns are extremely strong and durable. They are made from a translucent material so light can pass through them, resulting in a very natural appearance. Porcelain can be fused to the zirconium so your new crown will match the color of your teeth. Given their strength and aesthetic value, they are an excellent choice when cosmetic dental work is being done. Peter W. Fry DDS will help you decide if a zirconium crown is the right choice for you.
